Step by step

How to measure your foot at home

Two minutes with a sheet of paper and a ruler is more reliable than guessing from your last pair.

1

Stand on a sheet of paper

Do it in the evening — feet swell slightly through the day, and you want the size that fits then. Wear the socks you would normally wear with the shoe.

2

Mark heel and longest toe

Hold a pen upright against the paper and mark just behind your heel and just past your longest toe. That is not always the big toe.

3

Measure the gap in centimetres

Measure the straight-line distance between the two marks with a ruler or measuring tape. Do this for both feet — they are rarely identical.

4

Use the larger foot

Take the bigger of the two measurements and find it in the 'Foot length' column below. If you fall between two rows, always take the larger size.

A few things worth knowing

  • Kolhapuri chappals and mojadis are worn snug. Take your normal size — the leather relaxes and widens within a week.
  • Sports shoes and school shoes should have roughly half a centimetre of room past the longest toe.
  • Buying school shoes for a growing child? Go one size up, not two — a loose shoe trips them.
  • Between two sizes on any style: take the larger one.
