How to Spot a Genuine Kolhapuri Chappal
Four checks anyone can do in thirty seconds — stitching, smell, sole and price — to tell a real hand-stitched Kolhapuri from a glued imitation.
The market is full of chappals sold as "Kolhapuri" that were never anywhere near Kolhapur. Most customers only find out when the sole separates after two months. Here is what we check before a pair goes on our shelf, and what you can check yourself.
1. Look at the stitching, not the shine
A real Kolhapuri is held together by thread, not glue. Turn the chappal over and look at where the sole meets the upper. You should see a continuous line of thick hand-stitching, slightly uneven, going all the way around. Perfectly identical machine stitching, or a smooth glued seam with no thread at all, means it is a factory imitation.
2. Smell the leather
Vegetable-tanned leather has a dry, woody, slightly earthy smell. Synthetic uppers smell of chemicals or of nothing at all. This is the fastest test there is, and it is the one nobody can fake for you in a photograph — which is why we describe the material honestly in every listing.
3. Press the sole
A genuine Kolhapuri sole is layered leather. Press your thumb into it: it should feel firm and dense, and take a moment to spring back. Rubber and PU soles either feel spongy or bounce back instantly. Leather soles are also the reason a real pair feels stiff for the first week.
4. Be suspicious of a very low price
Hand-stitching a single pair takes a craftsman most of a day. When you see a "genuine leather Kolhapuri" for two hundred rupees, something in that sentence is untrue. Real ones start where the material and the labour actually cost — ours begin around ₹899, and that is close to the floor.
What to expect in the first week
A genuine pair will feel tight and unforgiving on day one. This is normal and it is temporary. Wear them for an hour or two a day around the house. The leather warms, stretches at the toe loop and starts taking the shape of your foot. By the end of the week they will feel like they were made for you — because, in effect, they now are.
